• Striker's future has been in doubt over the summer

Wayne Rooney has thanked the Manchester United supporters for their "unbelievable reaction" to his return to the starting line-up against Chelsea on Monday.

The England striker received an enthusiastic reception from the Old Trafford crowd in the goalless Premier League match.

Rooney, who was a substitute in the season opener at Swansea, posted some pictures from the match on his Facebook page and also wrote: "Here's some pictures from Monday night's game. It was an unbelievable reaction from the fans, so thank you. I really appreciate your support. It means a lot."

The 27-year-old has been pursued by Chelsea this summer and had hoped to move but will not be handing in a transfer request before the window closes on Monday.
