Wayne Rooney provided a timely reminder to Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal that he can be a prolific Premier League goalscorer after he netted a brace in a 2-0 win against Sunderland to help United go third. Van Gaal restored Rooney to an advanced position after trialing him in a number of positions across United's midfield -- to accommodate misfiring pair Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao -- in the last two months. On Friday, Van Gaal attributed United's struggles this season to the absence of a prolific forward such as Chelsea's Diego Costa or Manchester City's Sergio Aguero.
