Sergio Agüero in frame for Manchester City opener against Newcastle

• Striker set to return to training after missing pre-season games

• Boost for Manuel Pellegrini's bid to reclaim the title

Sergio Agüero will be available for Manchester City's opening Premier League match, the visit of Newcastle United on 19 August, with the striker set to return to training by the end of the week following the knee injury that ruled him out of all of the club's pre-season games.

The news is a boost for Manuel Pellegrini as the new manager prepares to try to reclaim the championship for City, after the club failed to defend it last season. Agüero's last appearance was in a 5-3 win over Chelsea in New York in late May during City's post-season mini-tour of America.

By the time of Newcastle's visit it will be nearly three months since the Argentinian has played so whether Pellegrini can name him in the starting XI remains in the balance.

The Chilean is without his key central defender Matija Nastasic for up to six weeks following the ankle injury he suffered in last month's Barclays Asia Trophy in Hong Kong.
